(East) Manjanggul

Manjanggul is the largest known lava cave in the world. Measuring 5 meter in width, 5 to 10 meters in height and more than 13,000 meters in total length, the cave was created about 200,000 to 300,000 years ago when Jeju Island’s volcano, now Mount Halla, erupted. Lava flowed from the crater of Mount Halla to the ocean, creating lava tubes and caves along the way, including the large Manjanggul cave that exists at present. It is considered so valuable that it was appointed as Natural Monument No. 98, along with Gimnyeongsagul. The cave’s interior resembles a grand underground place. In particular, a delicate stone turtle sculpture that looks like Jeju Island is popular with tourists. Stalactites suspended from the ceiling and lava wings on the walls of the cave add to the mysterious ambience of the underworld. Entrance is limited to only the first kilometer of the cave. As you explore, try not to disturb the Manjanggul’s permanent resident, which include bats, spiders and crayfish worms.
